World's first serial hybrid electric aircraft perform in Paris Air Show
Siemens DA36 E-Star hybrid electric aircraft that uses a series hybrid electric drive train has performed in the 2011 Paris Air Show. The aircraft is planned to be developed into a large passenger plane that will be energy efficient.
The aircraft drive train is similar to Chevy Volt drive train. Its uses gasoline and electricity from the battery to power generator interchangeably. DA36 E-Star is based on Diamond Aircraft's HK36 Super Dimona and use a 70-kilowatt engine made by Siemens to turn the propeller of aircraft. The aircraft also equipped by additional battery provides by EADS to give the power when takeoff and ascent.
The aircraft uses a two-seater composite glider. In addition to electric motor, the plane also consists of converter and control electronics. Siemens hybrid electric aircraft can fly, takeoff and landing without noise using electric-only mode. DA36 E-Star is the result of cooperation between Siemens, aerospace giant EADS, and Diamond Aircraft Industries.
